Portrait in Marble

Portrait in Marble is a sculpture in progress. It is a partial face being done in the Italian Baroque style. The stone itself is a very small 10kg light colored Italian Carrara Statuario block with beautiful grey veining. This particular stone was favored by some of the great artists of all time, like Michelangelo and Bernini, and I have to admit, Carrara Statuario it really is a treat to carve.
Below, you will find some shots of the piece in progress. As stone carving is a subtractive process, the features start a little larger and more comical during the blocking out process and are subsequently taken down to a much more natural size before finishing.
